Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate divided by 100. For $100 at 7.5%, tax is $7.50 and the total is $107.50.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For $107.50 at 7.5%, the pre-tax amount is $107.50 ÷ 1.075 = $100.00, so the tax was $7.50.

Why is my receipt rate higher than the state rate?

Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own sales tax. Your combined rate is the state rate plus those local rates, so it varies by address.

Is this an official tax determination?

No. Results are estimates. Product exemptions, shipping rules and local rounding can change the tax actually due. Check your state department of revenue for authoritative rates.
