Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). $200 with 20% off is $200 × 0.8 = $160, saving $40.

Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. Stacked discounts apply one after another: $100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = $72, which is 28% off, not 30%.

Is sales tax charged before or after a discount?

For store discounts, most states charge tax on the discounted price. Manufacturer coupons are often taxed on the original price — rules vary by state.
